A political ally of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) national leader, Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, and member representing Kano Municipal Federal Constituency, Engr. Sagir Ibrahim Koki, has resigned his membership of the party, citing internal crisis within its national leadership.
Koki’s resignation, contained in a letter addressed to the chairperson of Zaitawa Ward, Kano Municipal, took effect from Tuesday, November 11, 2025.
According to the letter, the persistent leadership tussle at the centre had hindered him from effectively discharging his duties and providing quality representation to his constituents.
“By virtue of the right conferred upon me by Section 40 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), Article 7.1 of the NNPP Constitution and other relevant laws, I, Hon. Engr. Sagir Ibrahim Koki, do hereby resign my membership of the NNPP.
“My decision to exit the NNPP becomes necessary because the internal crisis in the party leadership at the centre has made it difficult, if not impossible, for me to continue discharging my duties and provide my people, the good people of Kano Municipal, with the desired representation in the House of Representatives,” the letter read in part.
The lawmaker however expressed appreciation to the party for the opportunity to serve under its platform, noting that the experience and trust he gained while in the NNPP were invaluable.
Koki, a businessman and contractor before venturing into politics, was reportedly persuaded by Kwankwaso to contest the 2023 election under the NNPP banner.
His exit adds to the growing list of key defections from the Kwankwaso-led NNPP in Kano State. In recent months, the party has lost prominent figures, including Senator Abdulrahman Kawu Sumaila (Kano South), and Abdulmumin Jibrin Kofa, who returned to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Meanwhile, as at the time of filing this report, neither Senator Kwankwaso nor the NNPP state chairman, Hashimu Sulaiman Dungurawa, had commented on Koki’s resignation.
End.
