Gineva 2024: Designs That Speak Names

Have you ever immediately recognised a brand just by looking at its designs?

If this has happened to you more than once, then take your flowers. You are an observer. Fashion brands are now taking new forms, with their creativity speaking their name louder than a megaphone. People are now easily spotting the work of their favourite designers just by looking at it.

Let’s take the work of Veekee James, for example; if her outfits are not recognised for their beading, they are surely recognised for their corsetry structure. Fashion designers have now taken the entire creative process to a professional level, designing wear that not only enhances your look but also integrates you into a community. This is also what the Gineva brand stands for.

Founded by Ginika Eva Odikagbo, Gineva is a fashion brand that embraces bold, elegant, and confident looks. Some of their outfits are quiet and easy, while others are loud with shapes and structures. But whether you are looking for an outfit that sits somewhere in the middle or screams for everyone to notice, Gineva gives you something to talk about.

Here is their 2024 collection

The first outfit is a white peplum top with blue leaf imprints. This classy top is paired with royal blue pants that flow to the floor. At first glance, we can see that this design looks fresh and strong. The shoulders are the main attraction here. They stick out like little wings, giving the top an armour look. The high collar gives the head a majestic feel, and the waist pulls in to create a nice ruffle. With the royal blue pants that flow to the floor, the outfit feels strong but balanced. The pants soften the look of the top, stopping it from feeling too sharp.

But what makes this outfit easy to remember also makes it hard to wear. The big shoulders are pretty, but they prevent you from moving and give the design a rigid feel. This doesn’t work well for everyday activities, and small spaces like cars can feel cramped. The shoulders might also feel too much for someone who likes softer looks. Some outfits can still maintain their beauty when paired with another piece. But that might prove difficult with this design.
Because each design individually blends into the next, layering either the palazzo or the top with another design might diminish the outfit’s aura.

Everybody likes a palazzo trouser. They give room for movement and project the “Rich aunty” vibe in you. But, as comfy as having them in your wardrobe might sound, the length of these beautiful trousers might be the reason you choose to wear a pencil skirt over them. Let’s take a look at the length of this design. Now, we can see that because of the length of these trousers, the shoes are covered. A structure some people won’t enjoy so much.

Suggestion: Reduce the trousers’ length to an average level; not too short to cause an imbalance, and not too long to cause a fashion malfunction.

Like we noticed earlier, the top projects a warrior’s visual. It looks delicate, yet firm. But for the sake of preferences, the designer might want to consider making the shoulders smaller or reconstructing them into a detachable style.

Coming in second place, this dress shows a balance that the first outfit lacked. Here, the long sleeves and high neck of the design create a calm atmosphere. The ruffles add a distinctive look to the frame of the gown, almost as if it’s moving even when the model is still.

Also, the way the cloth hangs, it pulls your eyes from top to bottom without stopping the flow. The gold heels and earrings add a warm touch that finishes the look without getting in the way.

At the back of the dress, you can tell the designer thought about how she wanted the outfit to move from every side. The peplum comes unexpectedly, but gives it a ‘ball’ feeling. This little drama at the back not only holds up the front but also keeps the story going.

However, from the image above, we can see that the bottom is close to the floor. This makes it easier to get stepped on, especially in crowded or bumpy areas. This makes it challenging for the wearer.

Another thing is, some areas of the ruffle might use better sewing. If the sewing of a dress is bad, the edges tend to fall apart. And no one likes to be fashionable but uncomfortable.

Another area we will be looking at is the neck and sleeve region. This structure works because it enhances the dramatic feel of the ruffles at the front of the dress. However, designs like this might be avoided on sunny days, because they give no room for air penetration. And this might cause the wearer to feel sweaty, sticky and uncomfortable.

To make this outfit an easy wear, here are a few suggestions that could help greatly:

Firstly, the edges of the ruffles should be sewn better. This will prevent them from pulling or tearing. The designer should also consider making the length of the gown a bit shorter to avoid hazards like tripping. Also, the addition of a light linen couldn’t seem so bad for preference purposes.

If the designer wants it to do more, she could add a detachable ruffle. Little fixes like these keep the dress pretty and make it work better.

The third outfit is brave. The sparkly and transparent cloth makes it feel new and fun. The shirt and pants match, and the navy feathers at the ends make it feel like it’s moving. The cloth lets you see the dark underwear, which makes it interesting but not messy. From the side, you can see the shine and how the feathers move. The little collar keeps the shirt from looking too wild. It’s fun but also looks good.

But there are problems here, too. Clothes that are ‘see-through’ are hard to wear. You either pair them with the right underwear, or they look tacky. The feathers here are pretty, but they are weak. They could either fall off or get caught on things. Sitting down could even crush them, leaving holes. Another issue is laundry. Washing this cloth may seem difficult because feathers and sparkles don’t really go well with water. The feathers at the end of the trousers could also be a cause of worry to some people, because they’re likely to get dirty fast when the trousers are too long.

But good news. You can keep the glamour and stop the problems. First, sew the feathers better, so they don’t fall off as easily. Also, make the feathers easy to remove so that the clothes can be worn in various ways.

All three outfits have shown confidence in their own way. They have portrayed different design languages. The navy-blue ruffle dress is quiet, yet it moves in a way that makes it feel alive. The white peplum top and blue palazzo trousers stylishly display strength. The transparent feather set reveals a flirty side that brings life to a room.

Three of these pieces are unarguably good pieces of clothing, but being good is not just about looking pretty in pictures. It means looking at bottoms that could trip you, edges that need sewing, shoulders that stop you from moving, and feathers that need special care. Little fixes like clean sewing and length moderation can go a long way.

Fashion is personal, and it will always be partly art. The best designs find a balance between beauty and everyday use. These outfits are special as we have agreed, but they also have room to change into clothes that are kind to the person wearing them. With a few changes, they will certainly have that ‘crisp’ look. Geneva has done well with this collection. We see them and we commend them.
