The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has announced that the strategic road linking the Airport Road to Kuje is on track for completion by June 2026, a project he described as a “major milestone” for the area’s economic transformation.
Wike made the declaration on Tuesday during an inspection tour of major projects in the Kuje area council, where he expressed satisfaction with the pace and quality of work being handled by the firm, Arab Contractors.
“We are very impressed with the level of work and the quality of job being carried out by the company. They have promised to keep to their agreement, and by keeping to our agreement too, by the grace of God, June next year, they would have handed over that road,” he said.
He recalled that the project, initially awarded in 2019, had been stalled due to the contractor’s absence from the site before the current administration took office.
The minister credited his government’s intervention and interaction with stakeholders for reviving the critical infrastructure.
Wike also inspected the ongoing dualisation of the road from Kuje to Gwagwalada, being handled by Gilmore Engineering.
He emphasised the economic importance of the two road projects, stating they would drastically improve connectivity and commerce.
“They are very important roads. “Somebody from Kuje going to Gwagwalada does not need to pass through the airport road.
These are two major projects which will change the economic life, the economic activities of this area, and the FCT in general,” he said.
Shifting focus to the city’s sanitation, Wike issued a stern warning to waste disposal contractors, expressing his deep dissatisfaction with their performance.
“I have gone round personally, I am not well satisfied. I will meet with them today and let them know that it is a major, major, major, major project for us,” he said.
He acknowledged the global challenges of waste management but reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to solving problems rather than making excuses.
When questioned about further development, particularly in the education sector within the area councils, the minister dismissed critics as ‘not well equipped’ and ‘not well informed.’
He promised a wave of projects in the school system soon, stating, “We will soon start inaugurating and flagging off projects in the school system. It is quite huge.”
Wike described development as a continuous process and assured residents that the ‘Renewed Hope’ administration was serious about changing lives both in the city and the rural areas.
The minister also reported excellent cooperation from host communities and area council chairmen, noting that they understand the benefits of the projects and have not posed any obstructions.
