Benue State commissioner for Marine and Blue Economy, Hon. Denis Ter Iyaghigba, has hailed Nigeria’s re-election into Category C of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) Council for the 2026–2027 biennium.

He called it a historic breakthrough and a product of hard work, strategic diplomacy and sustained advocacy.

In a statement yesterday, Hon. Iyaghigba said Nigeria’s return to the IMO Council after 14 years affirms the country’s place on the global maritime map and reflects renewed international confidence in its maritime governance and technical competence.

He commended the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy,  Adegboyega Oyetola, for leading a well-coordinated, year-long campaign involving strategic engagements, sustained advocacy, and purposeful shuttle diplomacy across maritime blocs.

“This is one of the most significant victories for Nigeria’s maritime sector in recent history,” the Commissioner said, noting that the achievement aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commitment to reposition Nigeria as a competitive global maritime nation.

Hon. Iyaghigba added that under Governor Hyacinth Iormem Alia, Benue State is actively working to establish a strong presence in the marine and blue economy sector.

“Our initiatives align fully with the national vision, and Benue is determined to become a model for subnational participation in the blue economy,” he said.

He further highlighted that Nigeria’s return to the IMO Council is expected to boost investment, enhance maritime safety, strengthen environmental standards, and expand economic opportunities for states and communities across the nation.
