A former member of the House of Representatives, Hon Ogbonna Nwuke, has declared that the defection of some members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the

All Progressives Congress (APC) did not come as a surprise to him.
Nwuke, who represented Etche/Omuma Federal Constituency between 2011 and 2015, disclosed this yesterday in an interview with LEADERSHIP Sunday in Port Harcourt.

The former lawmaker stated that, considering the current division in the PDP leadership in the country, the party does not have the legal right to challenge the defection of the legislators

“I think that if we are looking broadly at what is playing out in the country, particularly in the South-South, you will find that there has been a weakening of the PDP.

“Quite frankly, even in South South alone, not less than three PDP governors have defected to the APC. It is supposed to have an impact, like it or not, on what is happening in the PDP. Did their defection come as a surprise? Not exactly so.

“Was it bound to happen? Likely. If you look at the PDP where Wike has been issued with the first time in our history, what is called a certificate of expulsion, what that implies is that there is nothing holding Wike and his supporters in PDP.

“The implication is that they are free to go anywhere. I don’t imagine that the PDP will challenge in court the issue of defection.”
