Bauchi State chapter of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) has visited the Bauchi State Police command to strengthen collaboration aimed at curbing the rising cases of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) in the state, as the command recorded 180 GBV cases in 2025.
Receiving the delegation at the state police headquarters, the commissioner of police, Sani-Omolori Aliyu, reaffirmed the command’s commitment to protecting the rights of women and girls.
He said the command has a dedicated Gender Unit within the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) that promptly investigates GBV-related offences.
The commissioner emphasised the need for continuous sensitisation to encourage victims to come forward.
“Many victims of gender-based violence remain silent due to fear of stigma. It is important to intensify awareness so victims can speak out and seek justice. The Nigeria Police has a constitutional mandate to protect women and girls from all forms of violence, and we remain committed to that,” he said.
He further assured NAWOJ of the command’s readiness to collaborate closely with the association, noting that their work often exposes them to vital information that could aid in fighting GBV.
“Our doors are open 24 hours. Whenever you come across information that can help us, please share it. Together, we can drastically reduce the menace of gender-based violence in the state,” he added.
Earlier, the chairperson of NAWOJ Bauchi State chapter, Hajiya Rashida Yusuf, said the association is committed to promoting the rights and development of women, preserving the dignity of girls, and protecting vulnerable groups in society.
She described NAWOJ’s objectives as being in line with the Nigeria Police Force’s mandate, particularly in safeguarding women and children.
She expressed gratitude to the command for the warm reception and reiterated NAWOJ’s readiness to partner with the police to tackle GBV, especially violence directed at women and girls.
