A deadly drone attack believed to have been carried out by Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has struck a kindergarten in Kalogi, South Kordofan, killing at least 50 people, including 33 children, medical workers said late Friday.
The Sudan Doctors’ Network reported that paramedics who rushed to the scene came under a “second unexpected attack,” while Emergency Lawyers, a rights group monitoring violence against civilians, confirmed a third strike on another civilian target near the initial blast site.
The groups condemned the assault, describing it as a “flagrant violation of international humanitarian law,” particularly the protection of children and civilian infrastructure.
Authorities warned that the casualty figure may rise due to communication blackouts in the area.
The strike is the latest escalation in the two-year war between the RSF and the Sudanese Armed Forces, now spreading deeper into the oil-rich Kordofan region.
UNICEF Representative in Sudan, Sheldon Yett, condemned the bombing of children, calling it “a horrific violation of children’s rights” and urging all parties to halt attacks and allow humanitarian access.
The Kordofan states have witnessed intensified fighting in recent weeks, following the RSF’s violent seizure of el-Fasher, an assault marked by reported executions, rapes, and widespread atrocities.
In a separate development, the RSF accused the Sudanese military of launching a drone attack along the Chad-Sudan border, releasing video footage of thick smoke rising from the site, a claim that could not be independently verified.
The conflict, which erupted in 2023, has killed more than 40,000 people and displaced 12 million, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO). Aid agencies warned the real death toll could be far higher.
UN Human Rights Chief, Volker Türk, has warned that Kordofan risks descending into atrocities similar to those recorded in el-Fasher.
