The Tennis Section of the Ikoyi Club commenced the second edition of its annual Tennis Masters tournament on Friday, with a substantial N4 million prize fund on offer.
This year’s prize money marks a significant increase from the N300,000 awarded to the winner in 2024. The 2025 champions in both the men’s and ladies’ categories will each receive N500,000, with all 16 participating players guaranteed a share of the prize money.
Speaking at a press conference on Friday evening, Diran Famakinwa, Chairman of the tennis section, expressed gratitude to sponsors Megamound, stating their pleasure in hosting the second year-end Masters. “The year-end Masters is a celebration of the excellent skills of the tennis players in Ikoyi Club,” he remarked. “The eight top male players and the eight top female players throughout the year have distinguished their skills in the art of tennis. And today, we are starting a tournament where one man and one woman will emerge as the champion for 2025.”
He recalled last year’s winners, Mr. Destiny Da Silva and Ms. Nene Lawani, in the men’s and women’s events respectively, adding, “Everything goes back to reset now and the tournament starts.” The tournament will run from 5th December until Saturday, 13th December. The women’s final is scheduled for next Friday, with separate days for the finals to showcase both events.
