The initial group of Nigeria’s contingent for the 4th Africa Youth Games (AYG) in Luanda 2025 departed on Monday, 8th December 2025, as preparations for the continent’s leading youth multi-sport event reached their climax.

Nigeria is set to be represented by 86 athletes across 12 sports, including athletics, badminton, boxing, and swimming. The AYG, running from 10th to 20th December 2025, marks a significant occasion as Angola becomes the first Lusophone nation to host the Games. The event will span six host cities, including Luanda, Benguela, and Bengo, and will feature young talents aged 14 to 17 from up to 54 African countries.

The National Sports Commission highlighted that the AYG serves as a crucial developmental platform to promote sport, identify talent, prepare athletes for global competitions (including qualifiers for the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games), and foster unity among African nations. Both the National Sports Commission and the Nigeria Olympic Committee have expressed strong confidence in Team Nigeria’s readiness and their potential for success in Angola.
