Renowned Hollywood filmmaker and actor Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Reiner, have been found dead in their Los Angeles residence in the United States.
Authorities disclosed that Police and firefighters responded to an emergency call at the couple’s home in Brentwood, an upscale neighbourhood known for housing several celebrities, on Sunday afternoon.
In a statement released to the US media, a family spokesperson said, “It is with profound sorrow that we announce the tragic passing of Michele and Rob Reiner. We are heartbroken by this sudden loss, and we ask for privacy during this unbelievably difficult time.”
Los Angeles police said the 78-year-old man and his 68-year-old wife were pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said the incident was being investigated as an apparent homicide.
While officials did not immediately identify the victims, California Governor Gavin Newsom later confirmed that the deceased were Rob Reiner and his wife.
Police disclosed that no arrests have been made and that there is currently no suspect or person of interest. Authorities also declined to provide details on possible injuries or whether any weapon was involved, noting that the cause of death will be determined by the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office.
A spokesperson for the Los Angeles Fire Department stated that emergency services received a medical aid call at approximately 3:38 p.m. local time (11:38 p.m. Nigerian time).
Robbery-homicide detectives from the Los Angeles Police Department were also deployed and have opened a formal investigation.
Speaking at a late-night news conference, Deputy Chief Alan Hamilton said both bodies remained inside the home more than six hours after emergency responders arrived, but declined to comment further on the circumstances.
Governor Newsom expressed deep sadness over the deaths, describing Reiner as a creative force in American cinema.
Newsom said he was “heartbroken” and called Reiner a “big-hearted genius behind so many of the classic stories we love.”
Rob Reiner, the son of legendary comedian Carl Reiner, rose to fame in the 1970s for his role as “Meathead” in the groundbreaking sitcom All in the Family, earning two Emmy Awards. He later established himself as one of Hollywood’s most respected directors.
