US-based Nigerian nurse practitioner and former Nollywood actress, Regina Askia, has heavily criticised Nigerian public office holders, accusing them of treating elective positions like hereditary family titles.

In a statement shared on her Instagram page, the ex-beauty queen reminded citizens that Nigeria is meant to operate as a democratic nation and not a monarchy.

She raised serious concerns about a growing trend in which top public officials seek to hand political power directly to their children and close relatives.

“I thought Nigeria was a democratic nation. Too many public officials seem to think that public office is a ‘chieftaincy title’ to pass to their kids. Na real wa.”

Her comments add to a growing wave of Nigerian celebrity voices speaking out against the country’s current political and social affairs.

Askia first found fame as a model before dominating the movie industry. She became a household name in 1993 after starring as Tokunbo Johnson in ‘Fortunes,’ a popular soap opera on the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA).

After featuring in hundreds of Nollywood movies and winning several awards, she stepped away from acting to relocate to the United States, where she currently practices as a family nurse
