A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Muhammad Jibrin Barde, has disclosed that the party has commenced a fresh phase of internal activities nationwide, including membership registration, revalidation and congresses, as part of preparations for future elections.
Speaking during an interview with journalists in Gombe, Barde, who was the 2023 governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Gombe State, said the ADC’s current mobilisation drive follows more than a year of consultations and political engagement under a reform movement popularly referred to as “Sabon Tafiya” (new direction).
According to Barde, the initiative involves politicians from diverse backgrounds, including former senior government officials, and aims to provide Nigerians with an alternative platform amid persistent security and economic challenges.
He explained that the party has issued official circulars outlining a timetable for activities, with congresses expected to begin from the unit level and progress through wards, local governments and states by the end of January, while the non-elective national convention is scheduled for February.
“The focus now is to ensure that existing members revalidate their membership while new members are mobilised into the party,” he said.
Addressing concerns about internal cohesion, Barde dismissed reports of divisions within the party in Gombe State, saying he was not aware of any factional crisis.
He described the party as united and committed to building its structure ahead of the next electoral cycle.
He pointed to what he described as widespread governance failures across the country, citing insecurity, deteriorating infrastructure, challenges in agriculture and hardship faced by traders as key issues confronting Nigerians.
In Gombe specifically, he raised concerns about the state of public services, referencing reports of power outages and industrial action at the Federal Medical Centre Gombe, which he said had affected healthcare delivery.
“These are the kinds of problems we believe require purposeful leadership and better management of public resources,” he added, stressing that the party’s objective is to promote equal opportunities, improved education and functional social services.
