A former local councillor, Philip Young, has appeared before a magistrates’ court over allegations of repeated sexual abuse against his former wife for more than a decade in Swindon Borough, United Kingdom.
Young, 49, was facing 56 criminal charges, including multiple counts of rape and administering a substance with intent to stupefy his former spouse, Joanne Young. The alleged offences allegedly occurred over 13 years.
Young served as a Conservative Swindon borough councillor for Covingham and Nythe between 2007 and 2010. The alleged offences reportedly took place between 2010 and 2023.
Appearing at Swindon Magistrates’ Court, Young, formerly of Swindon and now resident at Amberley Road, Enfield, confirmed his name and address but did not enter a plea.
Police said five other men have also been charged in connection with offences against 48-year-old Ms Young, who has formally waived her right to anonymity.
The charges against Young also include allegations of voyeurism, possession of indecent images of children, and possession of extreme pornographic material.
Dressed in dark blue jeans and a black zip-up jumper, the former councillor was remanded in custody and is expected to appear next at Swindon Crown Court on January 23.
