Osagie Hails Tinubu, Senate Over Idahagbon’s Reconfirmation As Federal Commissioner

Former Edo State attorney-general and commissioner for Justice, Hon. Samson Osagie, has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Senate, over the appointment and subsequent reconfirmation of Hon. Henry Idahagbon as federal commissioner representing Edo State at the Federal Civil Service Commission (FCSC).

Osagie in a statement in Benin described the development as a clear demonstration of confidence in Idahagbon’s competence, experience and ability to contribute meaningfully to the effective functioning of the Federal Civil Service Commission.

According to him, the decision of the executive and the National Assembly reflects a careful assessment of character and performance.

Recall that Idahagbon’s confirmation process initially suffered a setback during Senate committee screening following allegations of corruption raised by Senator Adams Oshiomhole, representing Edo North Senatorial District.

The allegation temporarily stalled the smooth screening of the nominee and generated widespread political reactions within and outside Edo State.

However, the objection by Senator Oshiomhole reportedly faced strong backlash, particularly among Edo South political leaders and public affairs observers, who questioned both the timing and the procedure adopted in raising the allegation at the screening stage.

Also the Benin Consultative Forum (BCF), a socio-cultural organisation, had Wednesday faulted what it described as the “manner and way” in which the allegation was presented, urging that due process and fairness should always guide such sensitive matters.

Reacting to Idahagbon’s eventual clearance and reconfirmation, Dr. Osagie urged the commissioner to see the renewed mandate as a call to higher responsibility.

He said, “Hon. Henry Idahagbon should rededicate himself to more effective representation and selfless service to the people of the three states under his purview and to Nigeria as a whole,”

The former Attorney General, who also served two terms as a member of the House of Representatives, expressed gratitude to President Tinubu and the Senate for approving Idahagbon’s second term.

He noted that the reappointment “is a testament to the confidence reposed in his capacity to deliver faithfully on the mandate of the Federal Civil Service Commission.”

Osagie further admonished Idahagbon to remain steadfast in upholding national values.

“He must continue to demonstrate patriotism, loyalty and fairness, and remain just to all manner of persons irrespective of tribe, religion or creed, in line with the ideals of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” he added.
