Police Arrest Man For Allegedly Defiling 7-year-old Niece

The police in Imo State have arrested a 43-year-old man, Kelechi Nwosu, for allegedly defiling his seven-year-old niece, (name withheld).

In a statement in Owerri, the state capital, yesterday, a human rights organisation, Stand For Humanity Foundation, a group that escalated the matter that led to the picking up of the suspect, disclosed that the abuser had been transferred to the State Criminal and Investigations Department of the police in Owerri, the state capital.

The statement, authorised by the president of the organisation, Chidiebube Okeoma, a journalist and children’s Rights activist, stated that the suspect would face the full wrath of the law.

Okeoma disclosed that his organisation, Stand For Humanity Foundation, collaborated with the suspect’s kinsmen of Umuobi Umukam village of Obollo community in the Isiala Mbano Local Government Area of the state, arrested and handed him over to the policemen at the Isiala Mbano Divisional Police headquarters, who ferried him to the State CID in Owerri.

The journalist disclosed that medical investigations carried out at the Police clinic in Owerri revealed that the child was abused.

According to Okeoma, the statement by the minor to his organisation and to the police disclosed that the suspect defiled her on two separate occasions.

The statement read partly” our organisation, Stand For Humanity Foundation, thanks the people of Umuobi Umukam Obollo community in the Isiala Mbano Local Government Area of Imo State for collaborating with us to arrest Kelechi Nwosu, who defiled his seven-year-old sister’s daughter when everyone had left the home for the farm, last Saturday.

“By this act, the people of Umuobi Umukam Obollo community have demonstrated that they are true apostles of justice, and we urge other communities in Imo State and beyond to follow the Umuobi Umukam example in fighting child abuse in society.

“We are grateful to the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal and Investigations Department – Owerri, for the professional commitment he has deployed since the president of our organisation, Chidiebube Okeoma, reported the incest case to him.

“Medical investigations we conducted at the police clinic in Owerri revealed that the child’s private region was tampered with. There was penetration. We have also conducted medical investigations on the suspect to determine his health status, ensuring the child’s health is protected.

“Under our watch, abusers of children will be made to face the full wrath of the law. Those who abuse children will continue to confront the law, and our platform will continue to stand with all victims of battery, suppression and injustices.”

The spokesperson for the police in the state, Henry Okoye, disclosed that the suspect would be arraigned at the conclusion of the police investigation.

It could be recalled that Stand For Humanity Foundation had two weeks ago facilitated the arrest of a 38 year old woman, Juliet Igwe, from Uruala in the Ideato North LGA of the state who used candlelight flames to burn the private region of her five year old’s housemaid and equally dipped the child’s two hands in a boiled water until her skins peeled off.

The suspect was arraigned last week before a magistrate in Owerri and was subsequently remanded in the Owerri Correctional Centre pending the report of the Director of Public Prosecutions, which was submitted on February 5, 2026. The court agreed with the prosecutor that the offence was punishable by life imprisonment if convicted.
