First Goalless Stalemate At AFCON Leaves Comoros, Zambia In Precarious Position

Comoros and Zambia played out the first goalless draw of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals, with the small Indian Ocean island nation narrowly missing out on a significant upset in their Group A encounter on Friday.

Comoros thought they had broken the deadlock in the 19th minute when Myziane Maolida found the back of the net.

However, his effort was disallowed following a VAR review due to a foul in the build-up. Maolida had tapped in from close range after a dazzling run down the left wing by Rafik Saifi, who delivered a precise cross.

The referee, after consulting the pitch-side VAR monitor, annulled the goal, ruling that possession had been gained through a dangerous tackle by Yacine Bourhane on Owen Tembo.

Comoros also had a late opportunity when Faiz Selemani headed over the Zambian goal after being set up by Captain Youssouf M’Changama’s lofted chip.

Zambia, the 2012 champions, delivered a rather lacklustre performance. This draw at Stade Mohammed V leaves Comoros, the smallest nation in the 24-team tournament, with just one point from their opening two fixtures, having been defeated by hosts Morocco in last Sunday’s opener, while Zambia have now drawn both of their initial matches.

Both nations face challenging final group stage matches on Monday, with a defeat almost certainly leading to their elimination from the tournament.

Comoros must overcome Mali in Casablanca to have any hope of progression, while Zambia will need at least a draw against Morocco.

Morocco and Mali are scheduled to meet in Rabat later on Friday in the last of four Cup of Nations fixtures played on Boxing Day.
