The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has condemned a widely circulated video from Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, showing a regrettable act of physical assault allegedly perpetrated by a helicopter pilot against a student of the institution.

In the viral footage, a helicopter with registration number 5N-BVT, owned and operated by Elin Air, was already parked when a student reportedly attempted to take photographs beside it.

Rather than addressing the situation in a civil and professional manner, the pilot was captured physically assaulting the student.

In a press statement, NANS spokesperson, Comrade Adeyemi Samson, described the conduct as not only embarrassing but deeply troubling, especially coming from a licensed aviation professional who is expected to be psychologically, emotionally, and mentally stable.

He said; “Even if the student’s action was considered inappropriate, it does not in any way justify the degrading, violent, and inhuman treatment meted out to him.

“The video clearly shows the student kneeling and appealing to the co-pilot, who initially approached him calmly, before the pilot suddenly intervened, without provocation, by kicking and slapping the student. This singular act constitutes a gross violation of the student’s fundamental right to the dignity of the human person.

“NANS strongly condemns this act of brutality and fully aligns with the demands and position of the Great Ife Students’ Union on this matter. We emphasise that no student should be subjected to physical abuse or humiliation under any circumstance.”

He further called on the Federal Ministry of Aviation and relevant regulatory authorities to immediately investigate the incident and ensure that appropriate sanctions are applied.

“We also demand the institutionalisation of regular capacity-building and behavioural workshops for airline operators and crew members, alongside mandatory and periodic mental and psychological fitness assessments for pilots and aviation personnel, in the interest of public safety and the protection of Nigeria’s aviation space.

“NANS remains resolute in its commitment to defending the rights, dignity, and welfare of Nigerian students at all times.”
