The Nigerian government has expressed readiness to deepen bilateral ties to boost trade, education, agriculture and cultural relations with Sudan and Haiti in line with commitments to South-South cooperation and African-led solutions.

Indications to this development emerged when the Nigerian government expressed solidarity and felicitated with Sudan on its 70th independence anniversary and Haiti on its 221st independence anniversary.

Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, in a statement issued on Wednesday by the spokesman of the Ministry, Kimiebi Ebienfa, extended warm congratulations to His Excellency Mohieldin Salem Ahmed Ibrahim, Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Sudan, as well as to the Government and people of Sudan.

The Nigerian government expressed hope that the anniversary will serve as a catalyst for ending the war in Sudan, and bringing about renewed national consensus, reconciliation, and institutional strengthening.

Areas of mutual interest include diplomacy, education, agriculture, trade, capacity building, and people-to-people exchanges.

He said the milestone provides an opportunity to reflect on Sudan’s enduring journey as a sovereign nation, its rich cultural heritage, and the collective aspirations of its people for peace, unity, and prosperity.

“Independence Day stands as both a celebration of national self-determination and a reaffirmation of the values of freedom, dignity, and shared responsibility that continue to define Sudan’s national identity,” he said.

The Minister said further that Nigeria acknowledges Sudan’s notable contributions to Africa’s political, intellectual, and cultural development, as well as the resilience of the Sudanese people in confronting complex political, economic, and humanitarian challenges.

According to Tuggar, Nigeria and Sudan share a long-standing relationship rooted in mutual respect, Pan-African solidarity, and a common commitment to Africa’s advancement. Shaped by shared anti-colonial experiences, both countries maintain a strong belief in Africa’s capacity to determine its own future, he added.

In the same token, the Nigerian minister in his message to his Haitian counterpart, Jean-Victor Harvel, said the historic anniversary stands as a powerful symbol of Haiti’s pioneering role in the global struggle for freedom, dignity, and self-determination.

“As the first Black republic to attain independence, Haiti occupies a unique and enduring place in world history, inspiring generations across Africa and the African diaspora in the collective pursuit of liberty, justice, and equality,” the statement said.

Nigeria reaffirmed its solidarity with the Haitian nation as it continues its efforts toward peace, stability, and sustainable development and underscored the importance of unity, resilience, and inclusive governance in addressing contemporary challenges and advancing national renewal.

“Nigeria and Haiti share historical bonds rooted in common heritage and shared values, and Nigeria remains committed to strengthening bilateral relations through diplomatic engagement, cultural exchange, and cooperation within multilateral frameworks, including the United Nations and other international platforms, in support of global peace and development.
