Morocco Squeeze Past Tanzania To Reach AFCON Quarterfinals

Hosts Morocco secured their place in the quarter-finals of the ongoing 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) with a narrow 1-0 victory over a resolute Tanzania in a tense Round of 16 encounter on Sunday evening.

Brahim Díaz’s second-half goal proved enough to see the Atlas Lions past a stubborn Tanzanian side that defended valiantly throughout.

The match, played in front of a fervent crowd, saw Morocco dominate possession and create numerous chances, but they found the Tanzanian defence, marshalled by an impressive Hussein Masalanga in goal, difficult to breach. The first half was a cagey affair, with Morocco having an early goal by Ismael Saibari chalked off for offside following a VAR review. Tanzania, despite being largely on the back foot, threatened occasionally, with Simon Msuva missing an early header.

The breakthrough finally arrived in the 64th minute. Achraf Hakimi delivered a precise ball to Brahim Díaz, who finished clinically from a tight angle to give Morocco the lead. The goal spurred Morocco to press for a second, but Tanzania, despite making several substitutions to inject attacking impetus, held firm.

As the game entered its final stages, Tanzania pushed for an equaliser, but Morocco’s defence, bolstered by late substitutions, stood resolute. The match was punctuated by numerous fouls and injury delays, highlighting the physical nature of the contest. Ultimately, Morocco’s quality shone through, securing their progression to the next round, where they will face a tougher challenge. Tanzania, meanwhile, can take pride in a spirited display against the tournament hosts.
