Former presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has told political opponents who are underrating the party to brace up for surprises at 2027 polls.
Kwankwaso, who gave the warning while addressing supporters at his Miller Road residence in Kano, declared that NNPP will shock those who have written the party off with the outcome of elections in 2027.
He said the party was being underestimated by people who, according to him, do not understand the dynamics of Nigerian politics.
According to him, “A lot of people who don’t know politics are underrating us. Some are saying we are children.
“We will shock them at the polls with the outcome of the elections,” Kwankwaso said.
The former two-term governor of Kano, however, assured his supporters that the NNPP remains strong and prepared, urging them to stay focused and committed ahead of the elections.
Meanwhile, a chieftain of NNPP, Buba Galadima, has dismissed insinuation that former Presidential candidate of NNPP, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, is on his way out of the party.
He spoke against the backdrop of reports that Kwankwaso’s may defect to African Democratic Congress (ADC), following the unfolding political intrigues with NNPP in Kano.
Galadima, however told LEADERSHIP that “He (Kwankwaso) is still the leader of the NNPP. He has not resigned his membership of the party. So there is no way he can move to another party.”
He however declined comments on the alleged defection plans of the Kano State governor, Abba Yusuf.
In a related development, former chairman of NNPP in Kano, Hashimu Dungurawa, has described the divergence between Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, and Kwankwaso as deeply troubling.
Speaking with LEADERSHIP, Dungurawa alleged that Governor Yusuf betrayed a trust built for over more than four decades.
He said Yusuf was not only a close political ally but a family member and longtime aide of Kwankwaso. He further claimed that the NNPP leader had entrusted him with sensitive political and personal documents over the years due to their close relationship.
“He was tolerated, guided and supported for 43 years. There was never a time the leader complained about him,” the former chairman said. “It is only after becoming governor, in less than three years, that people around him began to influence him to turn against the very man who made him politically.”
He alleged that the governor’s posture was driven by enemies of democracy and opportunists who sought to damage the longstanding relationship between Kwankwaso and Yusuf.
The ex-NNPP chairman however declined to speak about Kwankwaso’s possible defection to ADC, saying the unfolding crisis in Kano had made political outcomes increasingly unpredictable.
He, however, said he remains a committed NNPP member, praising the party for elevating him from a vice-chairmanship position to state chairman.
“I have no regret joining NNPP or remaining in it. The party has done excellently for me,” he said, adding that he continued to pray for the party’s success ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Despite the crisis, he insisted that Kwankwaso’s political influence in Kano remained unshaken, noting that the NNPP’s sweeping victory in the last elections demonstrated the former governor’s enduring popularity.
“The people of Kano believe in Kwankwaso. Wherever he goes, politically, they are likely to follow,” he said.
