The United States has announced its withdrawal from 66 international organisations, including key United Nations (UN) agencies and climate-focused bodies, a decision that has sparked global concern over its implications for climate action, development, peacebuilding and multilateral cooperation.

President Donald Trump signed an Executive Order on Wednesday suspending US participation and support for dozens of international organisations, many of them operating under the United Nations system.

US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, defended the move, stating that the Trump administration considered the affected institutions “redundant in their scope, mismanaged, unnecessary, wasteful, poorly run, captured by the interests of actors advancing their own agendas contrary to our own, or a threat to our nation’s sovereignty, freedoms, and general prosperity.”

The withdrawal from the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), which underpins the Paris Climate Agreement, has drawn sharp criticism from climate experts.

Former White House National Climate Adviser, Gina McCarthy, described the decision as “shortsighted, embarrassing, and a foolish decision,” adding that, “This Administration is forfeiting our country’s ability to influence trillions of dollars in investments, policies, and decisions that would have advanced our economy and protected us from costly disasters wreaking havoc on our country.”

Observers warned that the absence of the United States, one of the world’s largest emitters could weaken global coordination at a time when climate change is increasingly linked to extreme weather events such as floods, droughts, wildfires and heatwaves.

Hereunder is the list of the 66 international organisations the United States has announced its exit from:
