There was a heavy deployment of security operatives at the Kano State Government House on Monday amid reports that Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf was planning to defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Governor Yusuf rode to power on the platform of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), with the backing of his political mentor and former state governor, Dr Rabiu Kwankwaso, and his supporters.

Although the alleged defection has not been officially confirmed, the heightened security presence around the seat of power has fuelled speculation that the governor was considering a political realignment.

A visit to the Kano Government House area revealed Armoured Personnel Carriers (APCs) belonging to the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services (DSS) stationed at strategic locations, including the main gate and the roundabout leading to Government House.

Security checks were also significantly tightened, with persons trying to access the premises subjected to rigorous identification procedures. Movement in and out of Kano Government House was closely monitored.

A senior security officer at the scene, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the deployment was a preventive measure aimed at maintaining law and order. According to him, the action was taken to forestall any possible breakdown of peace in view of the political tension generated by the reports.

Similarly, a source within the Government House described the situation as routine security preparedness, insisting that there was no cause for alarm.

Meanwhile, fresh indications that have further fuelled speculation over the governor’s possible defection emerged with the appearance of red caps bearing the infinity symbol within the Government House. The infinity symbol is widely associated with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and has become a notable political signature of the president.

Some aides and loyalists of Governor Yusuf were recently seen wearing the red caps emblazoned with the symbol, a development that has intensified political discussions within the state and raised questions about an imminent move to the ruling APC.

Kano Remains Calm as Police Describe Security Presence at Government House as Routine

Kano State remained calm on Monday despite heightened political tension over speculations that Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf may defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Commercial and economic activities continued unhindered across major streets and markets in the metropolis, even as a noticeably heavy security presence was observed around the Kano State Government House.

A LEADERSHIP correspondent who monitored the situation observed the deployment of security operatives at strategic points around the Government House, with no fewer than seven Armoured Personnel Carriers (APCs) belonging to the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services (DSS) stationed at the main gate and the roundabout leading to the complex.

However, on normal working days, a mild security presence is typically maintained at the Government House, mostly comprising routine patrol vehicles conducting security checks at the gate.

Speculation over Governor Yusuf’s defection, which had earlier been expected on January 5 but reportedly rescheduled to January 12, 2026, has continued to generate political tension in the state.

Nonetheless, no official statement has been issued by the governor or the state government to confirm such a move.

Reacting to the security deployment, the spokesperson for the Kano State Police Command, CSP Abdullahi Kiyawa, stated that the situation at the Government House was part of the command’s routine visibility patrols.

According to him, security operatives were deployed across strategic locations in the state to ensure the safety of lives and property, and that there was no cause for alarm.

“The security presence at the Government House is a normal routine to improve visibility,” he said.

Meanwhile, security operatives were seen conducting strict checks on individuals seeking access to the Government House, while movement within the vicinity was closely monitored. Despite this, activities within the premises remained calm, with staff reportedly going about their normal duties.

Reacting to an alleged possible attack by supporters of Dr Rabiu Kwankwaso over the rumoured defection, the embattled NNPP chairman, Hashim Dungurawa, said the leader of the party was out of town, and that he was not aware of any security beef-up at Kano Government House.

However, the Arewa Youth for Peace and Security confirmed the unusual security build-up around the state Government House, adding that it was occasioned by the expected defection of the governor.

The group’s chairman, Comrade Salihu Dantata, stated that the state had become increasingly porous in terms of security since the defection saga began. He commended the security agencies for their efforts to beef up security.

“It is possible that when the defection happens, it might lead to a breakdown or chaos. So the deployment of security, as we have witnessed, is to avert possible violence in the state in the aftermath of a possible defection.”

He, however, disagreed with the Police, who earlier told LEADERSHIP that the security deployment was routine and not unusual.

He noted that while he understood the rationale behind the police position, it was evident that the build-up was occasioned by the planned defection of the governor.

He further stated that the seeming delay in the governor’s defection may be due to this continued consultation.

He also claimed that the governor’s defection does not translate to victory in 2027, adding that the politics of Kano State is hard to predict.

He recalled how the former governor of old Kano State, Abubakar Rimi, defected from his party and joined another, only to lose his re-election bid.

“Kano State is replete with such history, and I know that people will vote for whom they want in 2027. So defecting to another party does not automatically guarantee a victory at the polls,” he argued.

He further decried the defection of governors, adding that the concern that the country was sliding into a one-party state was valid, a situation, he said, was not beneficial to the country.
