Ministry Holds 2022 World Toilet Summit

The federal ministry of water resources in partnership with the Organised Private Sector in Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (OPS-WASH) and the World Toilet Organisation (WTO) has held this year world toilet summit in Abuja.

The summit of a 2-day event with the theme: Sanitation Innovations for Economic Development was targeted at high level decision makers, traditional and non-traditional sector, stakeholders from across the world.

Speaking during the summit, the minister of the ministry, Engr Suleiman Adamu said the summit has been hosted by different countries of the world but this will make the second time of its kind in the African country where the South Africa hosted the summit in 2012.

The World Toilet Day or WTS by the WTO was established in 2001 to drive the global interventions towards improved sanitation exercises.

Adamu also stated that this year’s summit in collaboration with government of Nigeria and private, OPWASh, was to bring together government actors, private sectors players, water and sanitation partners, development partners, NGOS and other stakeholder sectors to highlight sanitation issue and bring it to greater focus.

He expressed that Nigeria is rated highest country among the number of people practicing open defecation, but said he was optimistic that the purpose of the summit would contribute to harnessing the diverse sanitation economic opportunities in the country and reinforce our national development initiatives in addressing this challenge.

According to him, “Fostering the 2022 WTS is highly significant for Nigerians at this period. In view of our journey of creating open defecation free environment, as Nigeria is rated highest among the number of people practicing open defecation.

“It is our expectation that this summit will contribute to harnessing the diverse sanitation economic opportunities in the country and reinforce our national development initiatives in addressing this challenge.”

The minister said It is our expectation that the 2022 World Toilet Summit in Abuja will bequeath a lasting legacy to Nigeria and we will invite you to be part of our success story.
