The Nigeria Scrabble Federation (NSF) has lauded the National Sports Commission (NSC) for its unwavering support, describing it as instrumental in the accelerated growth and international success of Scrabble within the nation. Following a pivotal strategic meeting in Abuja, the NSF announced a comprehensive blueprint aimed at guiding the sport’s development over the next year and shaping its long-term future.
Engineer Bright Idahosa, President of the NSF, met with NSC Chairman Mallam Shehu Dikko and Director General, Honourable Bukola Olopade. Idahosa highlighted the timely nature of the engagement, stating it positions the federation to fully align with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Initiatives for Nigeria Sports Economy (RHINSE), aiming to make Scrabble more economically rewarding.
The new blueprint focuses on expanding domestic competitions, fostering wider grassroots engagement, and implementing aggressive marketing and sponsorship drives to enhance the sport’s economic value. Idahosa praised the NSC leadership, noting that working with such knowledgeable administrators simplifies the execution of plans.
Nigeria’s confidence is bolstered by recent outstanding international performances. Team Nigeria secured the World English Scrabble Players Association Championship (WESPAC) Best Country award in Accra, reclaiming the title from the United States. Youth players also excelled, with Prestige Archibong winning the U-19 title and Sophia Ekeruche dominating the U-15 category at the African Youth Scrabble Championships. Ekeruche further claimed the Best Female Youth title at the World Youth Championship in Malaysia.
Looking ahead, the NSF will prioritise the World Youth Scrabble Championship in Kenya and the African Scrabble Championship in Monrovia, Liberia, this year. Idahosa concluded by calling for unity among all stakeholders, emphasising that collective effort is crucial for Nigeria to maintain its position as a global leader in the mind sport.
