Coach Rosenior Secures First Champions League Victory With Chelsea

Chelsea will head into the final matchday of the Champions League in a position for automatic qualification, following a tense 1-0 victory over Pafos at Stamford Bridge, thanks to a late header from Moises Caicedo.

For much of the match, head coach Liam Rosenior’s inaugural European outing appeared to be heading for disappointment, as the resilient visitors from Cyprus absorbed Chelsea’s mounting pressure, which only increased the tension within the stadium.

A lacklustre first half, characterised by sluggish sideways passing, led to heightened calls for a more direct approach after the interval.

It wasn’t until the 76th minute that Chelsea, facing the daunting prospect of needing to secure an away victory against Napoli next week, along with favours from other matches to clinch a top-eight finish, finally found the breakthrough. Caicedo leapt to head the ball into the net, saving his team from potential embarrassment.

Chelsea had initially felt confident in their ability to be patient against opponents who had yet to score an away goal in this competition. Pafos’ manager, Albert Celades, a former midfielder for Barcelona and Real Madrid, had been in his role for an even shorter time than Rosenior, yet his team defended with commendable discipline and organisation.

There was little action until the 15th minute, when Reece James narrowly missed the target with a curling shot from 20 yards. Shortly after, Enzo Fernández headed in a cross from Pedro Neto, but was controversially penalised for what appeared to be a minor push on his defender.

Pafos nearly took the lead from their sole first-half attack, when winger Jaja’s shot deflected off James, wrong-footing Filip Jorgensen, only to strike the post.
