The Housing Development Advocacy Network (HDAN) has announced plans to publicly expose fraudulent real estate developers as part of a new initiative to curb unethical practices in Nigeria’s housing sector.

The organisation said the move followed rising complaints from Nigerians at home and in the diaspora who have lost money to fake property allocations, multiple sales of the same property, non-delivery of housing projects, and outright scams disguised as legitimate real estate investments.

The executive director, HDAN, Festus Adebayo, disclosed that it has entered into a strategic partnership with security agencies and reputable media organisations to confront the growing incidence of fraud in the real estate industry.

Housing Development Advocacy Network said the collaboration is aimed at protecting the public and restoring confidence in the housing and real estate sector, which it noted has been damaged by the activities of unscrupulous developers operating outside regulatory and ethical standards.

As part of the initiative, HDAN has opened a dedicated complaints and monitoring desk where victims of real estate fraud can submit petitions and supporting evidence against erring developers.

The organisation said all complaints received would be investigated and followed up in collaboration with relevant security agencies.

HDAN warned that developers who fail to cooperate with investigations, refuse restitution, or continue to engage in deceptive practices risk being publicly named and exposed, in line with legal and ethical advocacy standards, to prevent further victimisation of the public.

The advocacy group also issued a strong warning to real estate developers nationwide to operate strictly within the law, comply with approved building regulations, honour contractual obligations, and conduct their businesses transparently.

In addition, HDAN called on the Federal Capital Territory Administration to strengthen regulatory oversight and enforcement in the real estate sector.

It urged authorities to intensify monitoring, impose stricter sanctions on offenders, and improve transparency in land administration processes to curb sharp practices.

HDAN stressed that the fight against real estate fraud is a collective responsibility, reaffirming its commitment to promoting safe, ethical and inclusive housing development, while safeguarding the interests of subscribers, investors and prospective homeowners across Nigeria and beyond.
