Semenyo, Guehi Shine As Man City Rout Wolves

Manchester City secured their first Premier League victory in nearly a month on Saturday, a crucial result in their title pursuit, with mid-season signings Antoine Semenyo and Marc Guehi making an immediate and noticeable impact.

Semenyo, acquired earlier this month from AFC Bournemouth, found the net in City’s 2-0 triumph over Wolverhampton Wanderers at the Etihad Stadium, and also struck the woodwork with another powerful effort.

Centre-back Guehi, signed from Crystal Palace earlier this week, brought a much-needed sense of composure and authority to the club’s defence on his debut.

This marks a significant departure from last season, when City’s January acquisitions were primarily to bolster squad numbers. Manager Pep Guardiola acknowledged that his club, who provisionally sit four points behind Arsenal in the title race, were fortunate to add two top-tier players mid-season.

“Absolutely,” Guardiola stated. “Last season it was a lot of young, young players. Antoine was incredible at Bournemouth and Marc, captain of Crystal Palace, England international, he knows everything, he had the feeling from day one.”

Guehi’s signing, in particular, is a key reinforcement for a somewhat shaky backline that has conceded 21 league goals this season, seven more than Arsenal.

On Saturday, he registered 112 touches, second only to midfielder Rodri, and delivered 12 balls into Wolves’ final third, including a pinpoint diagonal cross to Omar Marmoush, whose resulting shot necessitated a superb save from Jose Sa.
