The First Lady of Nigeria, Mrs Remi Tinubu, has called for the ethical and human-centred use of artificial intelligence (AI) in education, warning that technology must serve humanity and not undermine human values.

In a message to mark the International Day of Education 2026, celebrated on January 24, the First Lady urged Nigerians to reflect on the theme of the year, “AI and Education: Preserving Human Agency in a World of Automation.”

She described education as the most powerful tool for acquiring knowledge, values, creativity and ethical judgement required to thrive in an increasingly technology-driven world.

“As we embrace artificial intelligence and innovation, we must ensure that technology serves humanity, not the other way around,” she said. “Humans must remain the drivers of AI, harnessing innovation while preserving the values that define us and sustain development.”

Senator Tinubu stressed that while artificial intelligence offers significant opportunities for learning and innovation, it must be guided by ethical considerations that protect human agency and responsibility.

She also reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to investing in quality and inclusive education, noting that such investments are critical to preparing children and young people for the future.

According to her, education should empower learners to think critically, act responsibly and approach the future with confidence and compassion.

The First Lady concluded by extending her goodwill to Nigerians on the occasion, wishing them a happy International Day of Education 2026.
