Oyo State is once again stepping into the continental football spotlight as it prepares to host Nigeria’s Falconets in a crucial 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup qualifying clash against Senegal’s Lioness of Teranga.
The state’s Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Wasilat Adegoke, in a statement on Monday in Ibadan, said that the highly anticipated encounter was scheduled for Saturday, February 7, 2026.
She stated that the choice of Oyo State as host followed the successful hosting of Nigeria’s Falconets against Rwanda at the same venue last year, noting that the match further reinforced the state’s growing reputation as a hub for international sporting events.
It would be recalled that given the emphatic victory over Rwanda, which showcased Oyo State’s world-class sporting facilities and organisational capacity, the Commissioner expressed confidence that the Falconets would once again rise to the occasion.
“The Lekan Salami Stadium has continued to serve as a fortress for our national teams, and we are confident the Falconets will make the nation proud,” she said.
Adegoke assured football fans, stakeholders, and the international football community of adequate security, effective logistics, and a memorable matchday experience, adding that the Falconets were expected to arrive in Ibadan on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, ahead of the fixture.
She, therefore, called on football lovers across the state to turn out en masse to support the Falconets as they take another decisive step toward qualifying for the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup.
