Ex-Sheriff’s Deputy Jailed 20 Years For Shooting Woman Who Called 911

An Illinois court has handed a former sheriff’s deputy the maximum 20-year prison term for the July 2024 fatal shooting of an unarmed Black woman inside her home after she phoned 911 to report a suspected intruder, court documents show.

Reuters reported Thursday night that Sean Grayson, who previously served with the Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office, was found guilty in October of second-degree murder over the killing of 36-year-old Sonya Massey at her residence in Springfield, Illinois.

The incident sparked nationwide outrage and was compared to other widely reported cases involving alleged excessive use of force by law enforcement against Black Americans.

According to trial evidence, Massey contacted emergency services after noticing a broken window and worrying that someone might have entered her house. Grayson and a fellow deputy were dispatched to the scene and went inside, where they requested identification from her.

Testimony indicated that during the interaction, Massey was holding a pot of hot water after deputies instructed her to check on it. Grayson’s legal team claimed he believed she intended to hurl the pot at him.

Prosecutors disputed that account. First Assistant State’s Attorney Mary Beth Rodgers told the court that Massey followed instructions to put the pot down and was then shot by Grayson, who was verbally aggressive toward her at the time.

During sentencing, Judge Ryan Cadigan of Illinois’ 7th Judicial Circuit emphasized accountability, stating, “That bit of unreasonable rage needs to be deterred.”

Media reports said Grayson expressed remorse in court on Thursday, apologizing to Massey’s relatives for his conduct and “terrible decisions” that night.

His attorney, Mark Wykoff, urged the judge to avoid imposing a prison term, arguing that Grayson is battling Stage 3 colon cancer that has metastasised.

Sangamon County previously reached a $10 million settlement with Massey’s family over her death.
