The security landscape of Taraba State witnessed a defining shift over the past two years, a period now drawing to a close with the redeployment of Brigadier General Kingsley Chidiebere Uwa, Commander of 6 Brigade Nigerian Army. His tenure marked a decisive phase in the state’s fight against banditry, terrorism and organized criminal violence one defined by operational clarity, sustained pressure and visible results.
When Brigadier General Uwa assumed command on 24 January 2024, Taraba faced layered security threats ranging from bandit attacks and kidnappings to cross-border criminal movements exploiting forests and remote terrain. Rather than rely on reactive deployments, he introduced a posture of sustained dominance driven by intelligence, mobility and presence. Under his leadership, 6 Brigade evolved into a forward-operating formation capable of conducting continuous offensive and stabilisation operations across some of the state’s most challenging environments.

A defining feature of his command was leadership by example. Brigadier General Uwa consistently led from the front, personally overseeing several operations against bandit and terrorist elements. He was frequently present with troops on the frontline supervising missions, motivating soldiers under fire and sharing operational risks. This hands-on approach strengthened troop morale, sharpened discipline and enhanced operational effectiveness, earning him deep respect across ranks.

Operationally, the Brigade recorded sustained successes. Intelligence-led operations resulted in the dismantling of bandit and terrorist camps, the neutralization of armed elements and the recovery of weapons and ammunition. Criminal networks that once exploited forests, border communities and key routes were systematically disrupted. Crucially, sustained pressure denied these groups the space and time required to regroup or re-establish influence.

Within the Brigade, his tenure strengthened professionalism, inter-agency cooperation and operational readiness. Coordination with other security agencies improved response times and reduced operational gaps, while internal discipline, accountability and mission focus were reinforced.

Beyond kinetic operations, Brigadier General Uwa placed strong emphasis on civil-military engagement. Through regular interaction with traditional rulers, community leaders and youth groups, trust was rebuilt between the military and local populations. This partnership improved intelligence flow and strengthened operational outcomes.

He was also notably media-friendly, maintaining professional engagement with journalists and civil society groups. This openness helped promote accurate public understanding of security operations and foster confidence in the military’s role. In recognition of his impact and transparency, Brigadier General Uwa received several awards from media organisations and civil society groups. In 2025, he was widely adjudged as one of the most performing Brigade Commanders and overall security heads, underscoring the breadth of his influence beyond the military sphere.

The impact of his leadership was tangible across Taraba State. Farmers returned to farmlands once abandoned due to fear, major routes became safer for travel, and numerous kidnapping attempts were thwarted and several terrorists were neutralized through timely intelligence and rapid response. Several abducted victims were rescued unharmed, reinforcing public confidence in the security architecture.
Civil authorities openly acknowledged his contributions. Officials of the Taraba State Government, including the Governor, praised Brigadier General Uwa, describing him as a God-given gift to the people of Taraba State. Such commendation reflected the depth of appreciation for his role in restoring stability and confidence across the state.

Importantly, Brigadier General Uwa’s success also reflects the strategic foresight of Army Headquarters in appointing experienced, disciplined and workaholic officers to sensitive field commands. His performance stands as clear proof that when competence, character and operational experience are prioritised in command appointments, security outcomes improve markedly. The Nigerian Army’s policy of deploying battle-tested leaders to frontline formations continues to yield measurable results.

His effectiveness was further strengthened by operating under seasoned field commanders who provided mentorship, operational guidance and unwavering institutional support. Notably, Major General Abdulsalam Enesi Abubakar, former GOC 3 Division and now Theatre Commander, North East region Operation Hadin Kai, as well as Major General Foluso Oyinlola, the current GOC 3 Division, both played critical roles in shaping and supporting Brigadier General Uwa’s command philosophy. Their leadership, mentorship and strategic backing created an enabling environment that allowed him to excel and emerge as one of the finest Brigade Commanders in the Nigerian military.

Worthy to note that Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu’s leadership and consistent support from Army Headquarters ensured that Brigadier General Uwa had the resources, operational latitude and institutional backing required to perform optimally. This synergy between strategic leadership at Army Headquarters and tactical execution in the field remains a cornerstone of recent operational successes across the country.

In recognition of his field performance and operational experience, the Chief of Army Staff approved Brigadier General Uwa’s posting to the Army Headquarters, Department of Operations, reflecting confidence in his ability to contribute to national-level operational planning and coordination. This is following a routine and mandatory redeployments at the end of at least a service tour of two years.

As he departs Taraba State after two years of excellent and exceptional service to humanity, Brigadier General Kingsley Chidiebere Uwa whom I always called “workaholic General” leaves behind a stronger Brigade, more resilient communities and a security environment better positioned to sustain gains. His tenure stands as a compelling case study in effective military leadership defined by presence, persistence, mentorship and purpose.
