The Ladies Golfers Association of Nigeria (LGAN) has issued an urgent appeal to construction giant Julius Berger to expedite the ongoing rehabilitation of the IBB International Golf and Country Club in Abuja. The plea comes as Nigeria prepares to host the prestigious All Africa Challenge Trophy later this year, a tournament for which the IBB Golf Course was a key factor in securing the hosting rights.
During the official flag-off ceremony for the rehabilitation project, Dr. Lami Ahmed, President of the LGAN, underscored the critical need for swift progress. Represented by LGAN Treasurer Nana Abubakar, Dr. Ahmed highlighted that Nigeria’s successful bid to host the continental championship was largely predicated on the high standard and quality of the facilities at the IBB Golf Club.
“We are well aware that Nigeria is set to host the rest of Africa later this year, and it was these very facilities here at the club that formed the cornerstone of our bid for the championship,” Mrs. Abubakar stated emphatically. “As you can observe, we have all turned out in significant numbers upon hearing about the commencement of the rehabilitation work.
We are all genuinely thrilled to be a part of this, and it serves as a crucial reminder to the contractors, Julius Berger, to please accelerate the pace, as we anticipate an inspection in March.”
Mrs. Abubakar further elaborated on the association’s commitment to the venue: “We successfully bid for the tournament with the understanding that these facilities would be ready, and we earnestly hope that this will be the inaugural tournament to grace this golf course following its renovation. We are earnestly appealing to Julius Berger to swiftly facilitate the renovation so that we can proudly host the tournament in November.”
The LGAN made it unequivocally clear that there is no contingency plan for hosting the esteemed All Africa Challenge Trophy Tournament at an alternative venue. “We possess no alternative venue other than here, as we based our bid on this specific location,” Mrs. Abubakar reiterated. “It is for this fundamental reason that we are imploring the contractors to hasten their efforts.” The successful and timely completion of the renovation is therefore paramount for Nigeria to uphold its commitment and showcase its premier golfing facilities to the African continent.
