Bauchi State governor, Bala Mohammed, has awarded contracts for the construction of 10 new abattoirs and the rehabilitation of 15 existing ones across the state.
The State Commissioner for Livestock Development, Dr Bala Musa Lukshi, disclosed this yesterday during the official handing over of project sites to contractors.
He said the intervention is aimed at improving meat hygiene, strengthening the livestock value chain and safeguarding public health.
Represented by the state project coordinator of the Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support Project (L-PRES), Dr Musa Adamu, the commissioner stressed the importance of quality workmanship, adherence to specifications, and timely completion of all projects.
While handing over the construction sites for new slaughterhouses in Giade and Shira local government areas, Adamu urged the contractors to strictly comply with the terms of reference, emphasising people-oriented, high-quality work and completion within the agreed timelines.
He noted that the projects would help eradicate zoonotic diseases and contribute to a healthier society.
In their goodwill messages, the chairmen of Giade and Shira LGAs, Alhaji Usman Saleh Mohammed and Hon Babangida Maliya expressed appreciation to Governor Bala Mohammed, the national project coordinator, Dr Sanusi Abubakar, and the World Bank for extending the benefits of the L-PRES project to rural communities.
They highlighted the positive health impact of the initiative in curbing communicable diseases.
The chairmen, represented by their directors of Agriculture, Alhaji Aliyu Maigari and Alhaji Musa Yahaya, further commended the state government and the World Bank for the gesture.
Speaking on behalf of Anthill and Bird Nest Engineering, the contractor handling the Giade and Shira projects, Alhaji Umar Attah, assured the state government of quality delivery and timely completion, thanking the project for the confidence reposed in his company.
Traditional leaders from Giade and Shira LGAs, including the Sarkin Fawan Giade, pledged community support, protection and sustainability of the facilities upon completion.
Similarly, the rehabilitation of slaughterhouses in Katagum and Warji LGAs was awarded to JK J5 Engineering Company.
Dr Adamu charged the contractor to ensure strict compliance with quality standards and project timelines.
Responding, the managing director of JK J5 Engineering, Dr Sambo pledged commitment to the project and called on the host communities to cooperate for successful completion.
On their part, the chairmen of Darazo, Katagum and Warji LGAs, represented by their directors of Agriculture, commended the L-PRES for the intervention.
Highlights of the event included the formal handing over of site plans to contractors and goodwill messages from stakeholders, as detailed in a press release issued by the CICT officer, Bauchi State, Mohammed Abdul.
