Deji Adeyanju Hails Peter Obi For Joining Protest To National Assembly Over Electoral Act

Activist and convener of the Concerned Nigerians group, Barr. Deji Adeyanju, has praised former Anambra State governor and and chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Peter Obi, for joining Monday’s protest at the National Assembly against the decision of the Senate to reject real-time electronic transmission of election results in the amended Electoral Act.

Adeyanju, in a post shared on his official Facebook handle on Monday, described the decision of the Senators as anti-people and a major setback to genuine electoral reform in Nigeria. He urged political leaders to go beyond rhetoric and take clear position against policies he said undermine democracy.

“I commend Peter Obi for joining the protest at the National Assembly today against the new Electoral Act, which I believe is an anti-people law and a major hindrance to true electoral reform in Nigeria. All leaders must take a stand and actively oppose such laws,” Adeyanju wrote.

The protest, which took place at the entrance of the National Assembly Complex in Abuja, was organised by civil society groups and pro-democracy activists, demanding mandatory and explicit inclusion of real-time electronic transmission of election results in the new Electoral Act.

Demonstrators chanted slogans such as “Our vote must count” while calling on lawmakers to amend the law in line with global best practices.

Peter Obi joined the protesters during the demonstration, marching alongside activists, including Aisha Yesufu.
