Wike Sets June Deadline To Inaugurate Airport–Kuje–Gwagwalada Road

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Nyesom Wike is impressed with contractors handling the Airport–Kuje–Gwagwalada Road project and declared that the critical artery would be ready for commissioning by June.

During an inspection tour of the project yesterday, Wike said the pace of work had exceeded expectations, describing the route as a transformative project for the nation’s capital.

The minister, while recalling his previous visit to the Kuje–Gwagwalada axis, where he had stopped near a mosque under construction, applauded the contractors for keeping their word.

“I am quite impressed. You know that the Airport to Kuje road is a key route for us.

“Like the contractors have said now, God willing, by the first week of June or June ending, we will have inaugurated this project.

“It is a very important project, so you don’t need to go through the airport if you are going to Gwagwalada or from Gwagwalada to town. We are very, very happy with what we have seen,” he said.

Providing a detailed progress report, Wike revealed that the Airport–Kuje stretch is now over 70 per cent complete, while work on the Kuje–Gwagwalada section has reached nearly 65 per cent.

“Well, if you take from Airport to Kuje, it is over 70 per cent, and here, from Kuje to Gwagwalada, I can see it’s almost 65 per cent, so I think they will meet up,” he said.

Upon completion, the road is expected to offer thousands of commuters a seamless alternative to the congested airport corridor, drastically cutting travel time between satellite towns and the city centre.

The minister said that the project is central to his broader strategy to decongest Abuja by opening up Kuje, Gwagwalada, and surrounding communities for faster urban expansion.
