The executive chairman of the Edo State Sports Commission, Hon Desmond Amadin Enabulele, has expressed his satisfaction with the extensive renovations undertaken for the upcoming 2nd Niger Delta Games.
Following a comprehensive tour of the host venues in Benin City, Enabulele commended the organisers, Dunamis-Icon Limited, and sponsors, the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), for their investment in upgrading the sporting infrastructure.
During the tour, which included the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium’s tennis courts, swimming pool, and indoor sports hall, as well as the basketball and volleyball courts at the Wire Road Sports Centre, Enabulele noted the significant progress.
“The facility upgrade is 90 per cent ready, and we are very happy with what is on the ground,” Enabulele declared. “The upgrade counts as one of numerous benefits of the Games being hosted by our state. The tennis court at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium and the indoor halls are fully ready. Work on the swimming pool is ongoing and at an advanced stage. We are ready.”
In addition to the facility inspection, the Chairman officially opened the training camp for Team Edo on Tuesday, 10th February 2026. Addressing the athletes and coaches at the high-end Governance Reservation Area, Enabulele urged them to surpass their previous performance in Uyo and to aim for victory as the host state.
“We are ready for the 2026 Niger Delta Games. Congratulations to you all here. Remember we have a lot of intelligent and brilliant people in our state. So for you to be selected for the task, you are already a winner. From now on, you should know you are now state Ambassadors because you are representing Edo State,” he stated.
Emphasising the importance of discipline, he added, “As we are in this camp, discipline must be our watchword. We have set a target for ourselves, and to achieve the goals, you must be disciplined. Without discipline and commitment, it is difficult to achieve much as sportsmen and women.”
Enabulele challenged the athletes to convert the silver and bronze medals won in the previous edition into gold, reminding them of the state’s potential to set new records.
Victor Umoru, head coach of the basketball team, responded on behalf of the contingent, thanking the Commission for their support and welfare provisions.
The training camp commenced on Sunday, 8th February, in preparation for the Games, which are scheduled to run from 20th to 27th February.
