Bauchi State has emerged as the overall victor at the second National Basic Education School Sports (BESS) Games, held in Bauchi, securing an impressive haul of 54 medals.
Delta State claimed second place on the medals table with 53 medals, closely followed by Kaduna State in third with 23 medals.
The closing ceremony saw Bauchi State Governor, Senator Bala Mohammed, represented by the State Commissioner for Education, Dr. Lawal Mohammed Rimin Zayam, commend the games for successfully uniting young Nigerians from various cultural, ethnic, and religious backgrounds through sport, friendship, and national unity. He emphasised the event’s role in reaffirming Nigeria’s collective commitment to national unity and cohesion.
The Governor extended his congratulations to all participating teams for their discipline, resilience, and sportsmanship. He also expressed gratitude to the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), the 36 State Universal Basic Education Boards (SUBEBs), the National SUBEB Sports Officers Forum (NASSOF), and other stakeholders for their dedication, particularly given the security challenges in some regions.
Dr. Aisha Garba, Executive Secretary of UBEC, represented by Alhaji Abdullahi Jarma, North-East Zonal Director, praised the teachers, coaches, and organisers for their vital role in nurturing future champions and responsible citizens. She reminded participants that sports impart valuable life lessons beyond winning, including character building, confidence, and enduring values.
Mr. Ipede Joseph, President of NASSOF, thanked all contributors for making the event a success for both participants and officials.
The games saw participation from 24 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). The next edition of the National BESS Games is scheduled to take place in Delta State.
