Referee, Assistant Stand Down After FA Cup Controversies

Referee Chris Kavanagh and his assistant Nick Greenhalgh have been omitted from the roster of officials for this weekend’s Premier League fixtures, following widespread criticism of their performance in Saturday’s FA Cup fourth-round tie between Aston Villa and Newcastle United. The match notably lacked the use of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR), which is not introduced until the fifth round of the competition.

The Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL), the body responsible for referees, bases its selections on various factors, including post-match performance assessments conducted by an independent Key Match Incidents panel, ensuring accountability for officials.

Among the significant errors highlighted, Kavanagh and Greenhalgh failed to spot a clear offside against Tammy Abraham for Aston Villa’s opening goal. Furthermore, a potential red card for Lucas Digne following a challenge on Jacob Murphy was missed, alongside a possible offside in the build-up to Dan Burn’s equaliser for Newcastle.

However, it was the controversial non-penalty decision involving Digne that drew the most opprobrium. The Villa full-back was clearly two yards inside the penalty area when he was penalised for a handball.
