Residents, traders and commuters around Martin’s Street, by Broad Street, on Lagos Island, have raised the alarm over uncovered manholes and mounting heaps of refuse that have turned the busy commercial hub into a dangerous zone.

Martin’s Street, located in the heart of Lagos Island, is known for its heavy human and vehicular traffic due to its proximity to major banks, offices and markets. However, concerned members of the community say the neglected infrastructure now poses a serious threat to public safety.

It was gathered that the uncovered manhole is dangerously exposed along a frequently used pathway, posing a high risk of accidents, especially at night or during rainfall, when visibility is reduced.

Traders fear that a pedestrian, particularly a child or an elderly person, could be injured if urgent action is not taken.

In addition to the open manhole, piles of uncollected refuse have reportedly taken over sections of the street, emitting foul odours and obstructing movement.

Business owners lamented that the situation is affecting customer turnout and tarnishing the image of the once-bustling commercial centre.

Community members are calling on the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), the Lagos State Public Works Corporation, and the Lagos Island Local Government to urgently intervene before what they describe as a “looming disaster” occurs.

“We cannot wait until someone loses their life before the authorities act. This is a ticking time bomb,” a trader told Lagos Reporters.

Residents insist that, beyond the immediate danger posed by the uncovered drainage, the growing refuse dump could also pose environmental and health hazards if left unchecked.

As public outcry intensifies, Lagos Reporters will continue to monitor developments and hold relevant authorities accountable until decisive action is taken to restore safety and sanitation on Martin’s Street.
