Following Tuesday’s night on-field incident during UEFA Champions League playoff first clash between Benfica and Real Madrid, Gianluca Prestianni has issued a strong denial regarding allegations of racist abuse directed at Real Madrid’s Vinicius Jr.
The statement, shared by football journalist Fabrizio Romano, sees Prestianni clarify his position amidst growing tensions.
“I want to clarify that at no time did I direct racist insults to Vini Jr, who regrettably misunderstood what he thought he heard,” Prestianni stated. This directly refutes claims that he racially abused the Brazilian forward during a match.
The Argentine player further emphasised his stance against racism, adding, “I was never racist with anyone and I regret the threats I received from Real Madrid players.” This suggests a heated exchange occurred, leading to threats from the opposing team’s players, which Prestianni attributes to a misunderstanding of his words rather than any racist intent. The incident continues to unfold as both clubs and players navigate the fallout.
