A rescue operation has turned tragic on the Benin-Ore Highway as personnel of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and a motorist lost their lives in a secondary collision.

The incident occurred at the Ovbiogie axis in Ovia North-East local government area of Edo State.

The Edo State sector commander of the FRSC, Cyril Mathew, said emergency responders had arrived at the scene of an earlier crash and were attending to victims when another vehicle crashed into the area.

The second impact struck those carrying out the rescue, killing an FRSC marshal and a driver at the scene. The identities of the deceased were, however, not released as of the time of filing this report.

Mathew said the situation escalated when some commercial drivers at the scene accused FRSC personnel of contributing to the accident.

The accusations quickly turned into hostility, with some motorists allegedly attacking officials and creating further disorder.

The chaos compounded traffic congestion on the busy Benin-Lagos Highway, leaving commuters and commercial vehicles stranded for several hours.

A motorist who identified himself as Iyobor claimed that the initial accident was caused by trucks parked indiscriminately on the road near the FRSC office.

He said repeated incidents involving stationary trucks had fuelled the drivers’ frustration.
