The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has expressed surprise at a comprehensive list of new demands put forward by Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle, asserting that many of his requested provisions are already in place.
Chelle, who has a year remaining on his current contract, reportedly submitted a detailed 19-point proposal last week. This document outlined the conditions under which he would continue leading the national team. The demands have sparked considerable discussion within Nigerian football circles, especially given the prevailing economic climate affecting the sport.
A prominent request is a monthly salary of $130,000. The coach is also understood to have sought a private SUV with a chauffeur and dedicated security, citing concerns over transport and personal safety.
Furthermore, Chelle is reported to desire accommodation with a constant 24-hour electricity supply and a fully equipped office featuring a projector for tactical sessions, alongside dependable internet access to facilitate modern coaching methods.
However, the federation has quickly moved to refute suggestions that the coach lacks fundamental provisions.
“Chelle has accommodation, a car, and a driver,” NFF Secretary General Dr Mohammed Sanus told The Guardian in an interview.
While he refrained from elaborating on the other demands, federation sources confirmed that the proposals are currently undergoing internal review. The requested salary increase, in particular, is understood to be a significant point of contention.
“Let us not forget that Chelle still has one year left on his current contract. These are fresh demands to be considered for renewal, which remains subject to debate, especially with these terms,” a source close to the NFF informed The Guardian.
“This is for the technical committee to review before presenting to the board for approval.”
The matter is anticipated to be deliberated at the technical committee level before any recommendations are put before the NFF board. With the Super Eagles facing vital fixtures later this year, administrators are keen to resolve the situation without creating disruptions around the squad.
There are also indications that the federation is evaluating options for coaching roles across various national teams, though no formal announcements have been made.
