ADC Slams Governor Okpebholo Over Cultism Claim

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has objected the allegation made by Governor of Edo state, Sen. Monday Okpebholo, accusing the party of promoting cultism and threatening the demolition of houses belonging to opposition leaders and members.

According to Mabel Oboh, the ADC South-South Zonal Publicity Secretary, it is deeply troubling that such serious accusations and threats are made without verifiable evidence.

She said, the office of a state governor carries constitutional responsibilities and it is bound by the principles of restraint and respect for due process, hence public statements from that office must be based on facts, not speculation.

“The African Democratic Congress is a party of the people. We will not accept incoherent, baseless threats made without proof. Governance should be guided by evidence, law, and constitutional restraint—not political paranoia.

“ADC stands for Rule of Law, Economic Justice, Youth Empowerment, Security Reform, and Accountable Leadership. Our aim is to strengthen institutions, protect citizens’ rights, and promote lawful political competition. We categorically reject any attempt to link our party with criminality without credible evidence submitted to lawful scrutiny.

“More importantly, ADC will not allow the intimidation of Edo citizens or the misuse of state power against law-abiding people. The threat to demolish homes based on political affiliation raises serious constitutional and human rights issues. In a democracy, opposition is not a crime, and political pluralism does not threaten public order.

“If there is any evidence to support these allegations, it should be publicly presented and submitted to the relevant security agencies for independent investigation. If no such evidence exists, then the statement should be retracted in the interest of responsible governance. Edo people deserve leadership based on facts, fairness, and constitutional order—not reckless accusations that increase tension.

“The ADC remains firm and confident. We stand with the people of Edo State and all Nigerians who believe in democracy, accountability, and the rule of law.
We will continue to engage politically with dignity, courage, and an unwavering commitment to constitutional governance,” the statement reads.
