Elche’s Rafa Mir Faces Over 10 Years In Prison For Alleged Sexual Assault

Elche forward Rafa Mir is confronting a potential end to his career as Spanish state prosecutors seek a ten-and-a-half-year prison sentence in an ongoing sexual assault case. The 28-year-old, on loan from Sevilla, is accused of attacking a 21-year-old woman in September 2024 while he was on loan at Valencia.

Legal documents reported by Las Provincias indicate the Public Prosecutor’s Office is pursuing convictions for aggravated sexual assault (nine years) and physical injuries (18 months).

Beyond the prison term, prosecutors are demanding a 13-year restraining order preventing Mir from approaching the woman within 500 meters, followed by seven years of supervised release. They also seek €64,000 in compensation for the alleged victim’s damages.

Mir was initially arrested in September 2024 and declined to testify after being processed in October 2025. Despite the severity, Mir has publicly maintained his composure, stating in an interview with AS: “I am very calm. We are in a judicial process and it takes time. We are waiting for the indictment and are very eager to go to trial.”

This legal development comes shortly after Mir was accused of using a racial slur during a La Liga match against Espanyol, triggering the league’s anti-racism protocol. While the incident was logged, El Periodico Mediterraneo noted no officials corroborated hearing the remark.

For Elche, managing a key player facing such severe allegations while competing in the league presents a significant challenge.
