The Bayelsa State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has announced that its local government congresses will hold on March today, while the state congress is scheduled for March 14, as part of the party’s internal process ahead of its national convention.
This follows the conduct of the 2026 ward congresses across the state, which party leaders described as peaceful and well organised.
Speaking with journalists in Kolo, headquarters of Ogbia Ward 9, the chairman of the PDP Caretaker Committee in Bayelsa State, George Turnah, said the ward congress was the first stage of the party’s congress process.
Turnah explained that the congresses are taking place in about 16 states across the country, in line with a court order directing the party to complete the process before holding its national convention.
According to him, the exercise would be followed by the local government congresses and then the state congress later in the month.
He said, “PDP commenced the 2026 ward congresses today. This will be followed by the local government congress on March 7, and then on March 14 will be the state congress.”
He noted that the exercise in Bayelsa was conducted peacefully across the 105 wards in the state, commending party members for their strong participation and commitment.
Turnah also dismissed claims that the PDP had weakened in Bayelsa, insisting that the party remained firmly rooted at the grassroots.
“If you are not here today, you will feel or believe that there’s no more PDP in Bayelsa State but I’m sure you have seen for yourselves. PDP is organic. With our people and the support, I doubt if anybody can take away PDP because we have PDP running in our DNA,” he said.
On disagreements within the party, Turnah described them as normal in a large political organisation and urged members to remain united.
“PDP is a large family, having a convergence of different people with various ambitions and interests and ideologies. But leadership means when there is turbulence, you stay put and ensure that it becomes calm,” he added.
He also commended the FCT minister, Nyesom Wike, for what he described as his role in sustaining the party at the national level.
