Iran’s Sports Minister has confirmed the nation will not participate in the upcoming World Cup, citing the ongoing conflict with host country, the United States.

The Middle Eastern nation’s involvement in this summer’s tournament has been uncertain since the US and Israel launched extensive strikes on Iran late last month, resulting in the death of the country’s Supreme Leader. Iran retaliated by attacking US-allied states in the Gulf, further intensifying the conflict.

When questioned by Politico last week about Iran’s World Cup participation, US President Trump reportedly stated, “I really don’t care.”

Mehdi Taj, head of Iran’s football federation, recently indicated it was “unlikely that we can look forward to the cup” amidst the hostilities, hinting at a potential withdrawal.

Now, Iran’s Sports Minister, Ahmad Donyamal, has declared there are “no conditions under which we can participate” and “no possibility” of their involvement in the tournament.

“Since this corrupt government assassinated our leader, we have no conditions under which we can participate in the World Cup,” Ahmad Donyamal stated in a television interview on Wednesday via RTE. “In view of the malicious measures taken against Iran, two wars were forced upon us within eight or nine months, and several thousand of our people were killed. Therefore, we definitely have no possibility of participating in this way.”

This statement confirms Iran’s official withdrawal, linking it directly to the recent military actions and the perceived injustice against their nation.
