Nigeria’s electricity sector has long struggled under structural inefficiencies, limited generation capacity, and persistent distribution bottlenecks.

For decades, homes and businesses have endured erratic supply, disputed bills, and the economic burden of reliance on diesel and petrol generators.

Despite reforms following the 2013 power sector privatisation, the national grid continues to face limitations in generation, transmission, and distribution. While Nigeria’s installed generation capacity exceeds 12,000 megawatts, actual available power often falls far below this mark due to gas supply challenges, aging infrastructure, and transmission constraints.

The consequences are felt nationwide, industries operate below capacity, small businesses face rising operational costs, and households endure prolonged blackouts.

For many communities, unreliable electricity has become the norm rather than the exception.

Against this backdrop, state governments are increasingly exploring innovative solutions to improve electricity access. In Edo State, Governor Monday Okpebholo is positioning power supply as a cornerstone of the state’s economic revival.

This commitment was recently demonstrated with the groundbreaking of a 100-megawatt power plant and a 300 metric tonnes-per-day Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) facility at Taihu Industrial Park in Ologbo, Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area. The projects are being developed by Taihu Industry Park Ologbo Company Limited, a subsidiary of China Clean Energy Technology Company Group, and are expected to significantly strengthen the energy backbone necessary to drive industrial activity in the state.

At the ceremony, Governor Okpebholo described the initiative as a strategic step toward building a resilient industrial economy anchored on reliable energy supply.

For a state seeking to deepen industrialisation and attract manufacturing investments, access to stable power is a decisive factor. Investors consistently cite electricity availability as a key determinant in choosing production locations.

By facilitating the development of a 100-megawatt power plant within Taihu Industrial Park, the Edo State Government is signaling its determination to tackle one of the most persistent barriers to economic growth.

The project’s significance extends beyond power generation alone. The accompanying LNG facility will supply cleaner, more reliable fuel for industrial operations, ensuring the park’s energy ecosystem remains sustainable and efficient.

For local communities around Ologbo, the initiative promises multiple benefits, from job creation during construction and operation to enhanced economic activity driven by new industrial investments.

Officials from the development company expressed confidence the project would be completed within six months, with commissioning projected for September 2026. If achieved on schedule, the plant would stand out as one of the most notable private-sector-backed electricity initiatives directly tied to Edo State’s industrial expansion agenda.

Governor Okpebholo’s approach also reflects a leadership style that prioritises direct citizen engagement. Just last week, he personally joined residents in Benin City protesting prolonged electricity outages and billing issues with the Benin Electricity Distribution Company. Rather than addressing the matter from a distance, the governor stepped into the crowd to hear grievances firsthand and assured residents that their concerns would receive immediate attention. Within 24 hours, he convened a stakeholders’ meeting with key actors in the electricity value chain to examine the issues and explore workable solutions.

At the meeting, the governor underscored the complexities of Nigeria’s electricity ecosystem, noting that distribution companies primarily provide services and do not generate power. He emphasized the need for coordinated engagement among generation companies, transmission authorities, and distribution firms to address systemic limitations affecting supply. Such interventions highlight a governance approach that blends political accessibility with administrative action.

Yet, the larger significance of the Ologbo power project lies in its potential to transform Edo’s industrial landscape. Electricity remains the lifeblood of modern economies.

From manufacturing and agro-processing to digital technology and logistics, nearly every sector depends on stable energy to thrive. By prioritising independent power infrastructure, the Okpebholo administration aims to insulate Edo’s economic ambitions from the volatility of the national grid.

Observers say the move reflects a strategic understanding: no state can fully unlock its industrial potential without first addressing its energy deficit. For Edo State, the 100-megawatt plant could catalyze broader economic momentum, attracting factories, boosting productivity, and solidifying the state’s position as a growing industrial hub in the South-South region.

While Nigeria’s electricity challenges are deeply rooted and require sustained federal reforms, state-driven initiatives such as this signal a shift toward pragmatic solutions.

Governor Okpebholo’s championing of the Ologbo power project represents more than a ceremonial groundbreaking, it is a deliberate attempt to place energy security at the center of Edo’s development strategy.

If successfully implemented, the project could mark a turning point in the state’s industrial journey, one powered not by diesel generators, but by a reliable, forward-looking electricity infrastructure.
