Taraba Approves Over N3bn Payment To End ASUU Strike

Taraba State governor, Dr. Agbu Kefas, has approved the payment of over N3 billion to the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and the Non-academic staff unions, Taraba State University (TSU) chapter, in a move to end the ongoing industrial dispute in the institution.

Governor Kefas, who paid an official visit to the university, met with the management team, ASUU leaders and officials of Non-academics staff to find a lasting solution to the lingering dispute.

The governor, who expressed worry over the prolonged crisis, said the move was to resolve the issues that has disrupted academic activities in the institution.

He said the gesture was part of his administration intervention to better the welfare needs of staff and improve the quality of education in the state.

The governor, however approved the immediate release of N200 million, with an additional N100 million to be paid monthly beginning from April until the outstanding entitlements are fully cleared.

Governor Kefas, during the visit signed documents authorising the immediate payment in the presence of the ASUU chairman, TSU chapter, Dr. Mbave Joshua Garba, alongside other union leaders, as part of government commitment to their welfare and funding of the University.

LEADERSHIP reports that, the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of the University’s unions scheduled a congress8 offer and take a decision on the strike action.

The development, it was gathered is expected to pave the way for the indefinite suspension of the strike and the immediate resumption of academic activities in the university in the interest of students and the academic community.
