Chairman of the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), Yusuf Mamman Dantalle, has call for the need for a citizens-centered democracy in Nigeria.
Dantalle made the remarks at an Iftar ( breaking of fast) gathering, organised by Lilian Adebayo, the wife of the 2023 presidential candidate of the Social Democratic party (SDP), Adewole Adebayo on Thursday in Abuja.
He stressed that democracy is about inclusion and participation, allowing citizens to freely choose their leaders and ensuring the electoral process reflects the collective will of the people.
He called for policy adjustments in Nigeria’s electoral framework to strengthen democratic participation, expressing concern over provisions that may limit citizens’ participation, such as indirect party primaries and mandatory NIN inclusion.
“The ruling party needs to intervene, consult broadly and reform essential electoral laws to sustain Nigeria’s multi-party democracy.” he said
The IPAC chairman emphasis that political competition should not be approached with a “win at all costs mentality,” but rather with respect for legal processes and democratic principles.
He commended the SDP for organizing the Iftar, saying it promotes unity and dialogue among political actors.
SDP 2023 presidential candidate Adewole Adebayo also calls for policies that strengthen citizens’ participation in Nigeria’s democratic process.
He emphasized the importance of humility, justice, and accountability in leadership, citing the values promoted during Ramadan.
“Democracy ultimately belongs to the Nigerian people and not to a limited group of political office holders,” he said.
Also speaking, SDP National Chairman, Prof. Sadiq Umar Gombe, highlighted the importance of unity and constructive political engagement in strengthening Nigeria’s democracy.
He commended journalists for their efforts in informing the public and supporting democratic accountability, urging political actors to promote peaceful engagement and collaboration .
