Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson has showered praise on goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo after the shot-stopper produced a man-of-the-match display to secure a crucial 2-0 victory over Swansea City in the Sky Bet Championship on Friday night.
The win at the Racecourse Ground was a massive boost for the Red Dragons, snapping a worrying three-game winless streak and strengthening their hold on a play-off position in the highly competitive second tier.
While the scoreline suggests a comfortable evening for the hosts, the reality on the pitch was far different. Swansea dominated possession for large swathes of the game, pinning Wrexham back and peppering their goal with efforts. However, time and again, they were denied by Okonkwo, who produced a string of stunning saves to keep his side in the contest.
Speaking after the final whistle, Parkinson specifically highlighted the psychological aspect of his goalkeeper’s performance. He noted that Okonkwo’s display was particularly impressive given the context of the previous meeting between the two sides.
“There’s a lot of key moments tonight,” Parkinson told BBC Sport. “I think Arthur making that save after what happened down at their place shows why he’s been part of a successful team, because he has got character.”
The manager’s comments alluded to the mental resilience required to bounce back from any past disappointments, emphasizing that Okonkwo’s ability to stay focused and deliver under pressure is a hallmark of a top goalkeeper.
Thanks to Okonkwo’s heroics at one end, Wrexham were able to capitalise at the other, finding the two goals needed to secure the vital three points and delight the home crowd.
